Bokrea 2012

It's been a crazy week!

Monday – my week started off quite boring with school and... commuting.

Tuesday – it was Singles Awareness Day and I had lectures all day and spent all night with Doctor Who and Black Books. Bernard Black, my man, lets spend our time together with drinking wine and judging people while drowning them in sharp sarcasm.

Wednesday – I spent most of my day with my books and then shared ridiculous amounts of coffee with some friends at our district’s LGBT Youth Café. (“It’s cheaper than a movie and there’s free coffee.” - Marla Singer, Fight Club) We also have cupcakes, biscuits and other delicious thingies one can eat. Omnom.

Thursday - my new tattoo covers the old one I got in Belfast and includes the legendary answer to The Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe and Everything no less than four times. Not too sure I will hand out a picture of it before it’s healed up. All you need to know is that it's bigger and better.

Friday – I buried myself in books to catch up on my reading for school and then headed off north with my two companions to hold some diversity training workshops focusing on LGBT issues. Despite that it was my first time it went well I think. More of that next week!

Saturday – I don’t know when parking one’s car in a ditch turned into a good idea but apparently I found it immensely amusing to do so. No worries, I didn't get hurt, my passenger didn't get hurt and my car didn't get hurt. We're alright. Snow is never just snow for too long around here so sliding off the road because of slush and being appointed president of my local LGBT Youth Federation was Saturday’s chores.

Sunday – all that remained for me to do was to change my hair colour. So I did. It’s now some shade of brownish copper... or was it mahogany brown? Either way, it’s a bit different but not too much. So far, so good. We’ll see how I feel about all this in the morning.

And I really hope that next week is a bit less eventful. There’s two weeks left until my first exam for this semester and the mere thought of sitting down for six hours just to spew out everything I’ve learnt since the middle of January is daunting.
But I'm longing for the weekend following that momentous exam because that’s when I get to meet the babes I went to university with a few years back. I miss them all like crazy and I’m super-excited to see them again.

Knock, knock.

"Knock , knock!"
"Who's there?"
"The Doctor."
"Doctor Who?"
"Correct."

It’s official – I’m a Whovian. Doctor Who is the new fandom to add to all the others (it's getting a bit crowded, isn't it?).
It’s the playfulness of the show that I enjoy the most. One never encounters that doomsday sensation like in most scifi shows. And then there’s the Doctor, oh the Doctor! At the moment I'm enjoying David Tennant's tenth doctor. There's something strangely arousing with a handsome man who matches a suit with Converse sneakers.

Hardcore comic book nerds

I f*ing love them. This rant is in one word: "amazing".

Oh and btw; how many of the actors can You recognize?
(And how much do we dislike DC now? I was completely convinced that Superman was a total douchebag but not exactly how much of one until I watched this)

Inked

Song on my mind right now: "I've got a brand new tattoo...".
Just like last time I was a total wuss and almost fainted a few minutes in. Other than that it was an awesome 1,5 hours. My leg's a bit swollen now. I'll post a picture when it's all calm and nice again.

THERE ARE FEW WORDS adequate enough to thank the ever so scrumptious Lucy. Baby, never change. Thank you for keeping me company today.

Happy S.A.D. everyone!

Valentine's Day is that sort of fabricated holiday that makes me really furious (what holiday isn’t fabricated though?). It doesn’t have all that much to do with me being single because Valentine’s made me sick when even back when I was together with someone. It’s the whole idea of commercializing love and putting a value on it. Love is an all around the year thing and is not to be bought. Making it pink doesn’t make it any better - as if pink wasn’t horrible to begin with.
Valentine’s Day began being celebrated in the 13th century but was actually established at the end of the 5th century and by the Middle Ages it became fashionable. It wasn’t until the 19th century that we began giving each other cards. By now it’s more about chocolates, dinners, flowers, teddy bears and all sorts of things – the pricier the stuff the better it would seem. Call me a stick in the mud if you will, but I think that’s bullshit. When did handwritten cards or letters that actually means something go out of fashion? I don’t want a card that’s been given to hundreds of other people! That’s not love. That’s laziness and a huge lack of imagination.
Now that I’m single Valentine’s makes me more than a little bit bitter. I do realize that I’m like hundreds of thousands of other singles out there with all this pent up anger dribbling out bit by bit in a blog post that only a selected few will have the energy to get through but I can’t help it. I’m not even going to try and stop myself. I can’t stand all the hypocrisy surrounding the concept of love. But mostly, I'm bitter because there's no reason to feel bad about being single. Being one half of a couple does not mean you're complete.
I am not a cynic.

Happy Singles Awareness Day!

February resolutions

(New Year’s resolutions are so last year so I had to think of something else.)
I’m making a resolution effective immediately; I’m going to give people more compliments. If I think someone is beautiful or have a particularly awesome set of shoes on, that’s exactly what I’ll tell them. I think people deserve more compliments. They deserve to know that they’re valuable.
So yeah. That’s what I’ll be working on from tonight.
My single hope with this is that people will respond in kind. C’mon people, I dare you. Tell people around you how much you appreciate them and see what happens.

Mello

Beware the fangirl squee

Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki (Dean and Sam Winchester from the TV show Supernatural) in a clip from Nashcon 2012 discussing periods and swash buckling. I couldn't help myself. I'm just the kind of sad little fangirl I pretend I'm not.

Updated TV

Desperate Housewives: Just finished season four and I’ve got two words for you: Nathan Fillion. That’ll probably be my lasting memory of that season. No, I’m sure it will be.
That and the Scavo’s new problematic restaurant. Tom's still a bit of a favourite.

Sherlock: I’m stunned. And obsessed. It’s so amazing I can’t even begin to tell you how wonderful it’s been to return to that show over and over ever since I laid my big nerdy hands on it. It's gone to the point where I start crying as soon as someone mentions how heartbroken Watson was after Sherlock's fall. I'm not even embarassed about it anymore.

Moriarty was real. I believe in Sherlock Holmes.

Death Valley: Crap. Immature crap. GIVE ME BACK THE WALKING DEAD! This coming from the girl who actually thought some of the stuff Jackass did back in the day was funny. There's no logic whatsoever. Like, if there's been vampires, werewolves and zombies around for a whole year, where's the curfew they probably would have set up? Why doesn't these special forces wear better armor? Or, here's a rebellious thought; WHY NOT SHOW SOME FUCKING PROFESSIONALISM??!

Spartacus: Vengeance: At last we get to meet our favourite gladiators again! Obviously I was (rather painfully) disappointed by the first episode – Andy Whitfield (rest his soul) have been replaced by Liam McIntyre (who did very well) and most of my favourite characters are gone (Ashur, Barca, Gaia and Varro are all dead... *angry mumbling*). Not only that but they’ve changed actors and actresses all over the place so if you’re expecting to recognize... well, anyone, you should re-watch Blood and Sand just to brush up on the character names. No need to worry too much though; Craig Parker, Lucy Lawless, Manu Bennett and Viva Bianca are still on the show.
Edit: Seen second episode. Eeverything's muuuuch better now. One of my favourite conniving muscle-mountains are back from the dead. And he's still the same conspiring twat he was last season. And in Gods of the Arena. Omnomnom.
