Angel is disturbing

I'm doing a rewatch of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the brand new reactions I'm having so far are disturbing considering how much I used to appreciate the show. If you're wondering - Yes, overanalyzing has become a thing for me.
I'm halfway through season three now and Buffy is really being punished for everything she does! For instance...
  • Buffy sleeps with Angel for the first time - he turns into a monster, ridicules her and tries to kill her.
  • Buffy dresses a certain way - she gets called a slut and is told by teachers and the principal it's her fault when she's sexually assaulted by some dudebro on the swim team.
  • She feels powerless about her situation (you know the one where she's the Slayer who was destined to die at 16 to save everyone on the planet...) - she gets screamed at and told she's oversensitive and should just suck it up.
  • She runs away because she wants to protect her friends and needs time to process killing Angel - she gets screamed at and told she's stupid as she returns to Sunnydale. Noone asks her how she's been, how she feels or what happened to make her leave.
  • When Angel comes back and Buffy hides him - they actually ask her what right she has to love him. Again with the yelling at her.
  • Buffy's mum! Holy hell, all the times that she talks about wanting a "normal dauther" instead of a Slayer... Sometimes, it's an excellent metaphor for a child coming out as LGBT to their parents but after a while it gets old. Old as balls.

This coming from the people that are supposed to be her friends and family. Her Scooby Gang. They are being dicks to her. No wonder she doesn't want to share her thoughts with them. Though I have to say, for being a 16-year-old she's taking it pretty well.
Also, Buffy is 15 the first time Angel sees her and falls in love with her instantly. He's 270! AND he follows her around everywhere she goes. Creepy much? (Come to think of it, it's not much better than Twilight when you read it like this, is it?)
Another problem with Buffy is something most tv shows suffer from; all main characters are white and if there are any non-white characters they're most probably antagonists or small side characters and gets killed off quickly.

The only character that I fully and completely adore is Oz. Galloping gargoyles, again with me falling for the werewolf. Tss.

More gifts

I love my family. They know me. For my birthday I only had one wish and that was to have a big family dinner. Not only did I get one kick ass dinner but Moo-Ma thought it would be a great idea to buy me some greyish green wool fabric for my next moybog project (a tight-fitting 1400th century kirtle with buttoned sleeves and lacing in the front). Brother dearest gave me a book on the history of the golden beverage of beer (and I had a light read-through while drinking the beverage of which the book spoke). My sister proved to me that the situation could only get better by giving me homemade lemonade, jam and bread. It was beautiful. And as if that wasn't good enough a friend of mine gave me a 7 foot long tablet woven band! Oh the joy!

Me and my boy band haircut

Well, of course I started researching my next medieval costume project instead of sitting down on my big behind for a few hours to catch up on my school reading. My boy band haircut and I wished for the weekend to last longer. “Ugh” I moan as I yet again let my eyes only slightly slide over the pile of books I should read until next week’s exam. “Ugh” I repeat as I realise that I only have one week left until that stupid exam that a great portion of last year’s class failed miserably.  Like the idiot I am I’ve spent too much time on Tumblr and too little time actually reading books that hold information I’ll need for school. I’ve been reading, but the entirely wrong sort of literature as neither Harry Potter nor A Feast for Crows will help me write my bachelor thesis. (Not this time at least.)
“Fuck it” I whisper as I reblog another picture of Tom Hiddleston.

Cake overload

There was too much cake. I have yet to recover from the chocolate mousse death cake I bought for my b-day this last Wednesday. As far as birthday gifts goes I've been in luck; three birthday cards sneaked their way in to my mailbox, a green little package contained a book (The Sherlock Holmes school of Self-Defence by E.W. Barton-Wright) and together with a pint of magnificent beer that I didn't have to pay for at the pub I was handed a pair of moustached braces (or suspenders, depending on which kind of English you're using). Three different people that definitely knew what would cheer me up.

And I used to be so nice

I'm not entirely certain when it happened but somewhere along the way I became a very boring person. I used to be able to turn the most boring of days into a rather entertaining blog post.
The reason to why I suddenly came to this conclusion was that I’ve been spending the last half an hour reading through old blog posts of mine and marvel at how well I used to describe my life with help of a little humour and lots of sarcasm. Compared to how I was back then I’m a really nasty piece of work now. A plausible explanation could be that I’ve got a taste of the kind of life I don’t quite like; routine and boredom. And I put off the things I know will lift my spirits in favour of doing all those other... adult things. Personally, I think it’s the backside of reading so much for school – it puts me down.
Could this be a part of a quarter-life crisis? My birthday’s tomorrow. Good thing there's cake. Thank the gods for cake!

Female geek role models

There is sexualisation going on in all subcultures so I'm so very sorry geeks and nerds but we're just as guilty to this as everyone else. Don't you dare think that we are any better than other subcultures. You can find plenty of examples of awesome female role models in pop culture as well. We're not perfect but that only means that we can get better.

Oh for heaven's sake...

Are there any words for my anger about there being so many plans for so many superhero movies but still no talk whatsoever about a superheroine movie? No Wonder Woman in sight. No Superwoman. No Bat Girl. No She-Hulk. No Spider Woman. I weep as I read through the cast of X-Men: Days of Future Past and find only six women. Where are all the superheroines??! And don't talk to me about there being "no interest for that" because there is! There is a fan base! There is demand! And if, for some reason, you don't think that there are any heroines that could hold up their own movie then at least make sure that women are  properly represented in movies where they group heroes and heroines together. Black Widow had the third most amount of screen time in the Avengers, behind only Iron Man and Captain America and we loved it! We loved seeing an interesting and strong heroine for once. Well, I did at least.

So NOOOOO, there are no words available in any the two languages I speak that could describe all of my anger.

Champagne for my hard work?

I bought myself an expensive champagne (real champagne, mind you, the stuff from France) as motivation to finish my bachelor thesis once and for all. It's going to be an unimaginable joy to pop that bottle open in January... March.

Not so amused about uni

First day back at uni and I'm not the least bit enthusiastic about my schedule. It's packed full of... things... and stuff I'll have to do. I don't approve. I want to continue reading Harry Potter and maybe have that seventh cup of lovely tea. What I don't want is to read another word about how to write my bachelor thesis accompanied only by a fifth mug of coffee. Which, by the way, will make sure that I can't sleep for another 12 hours.

Again with these f-ing buttons

I'm working on a new project.
Well, in all honesty, it's an old project I'm remaking simply because the idea got stuck in my mind and wouldn't let go. I want this old surcôte of mine to be more British 1370's and less of the 1100's that it used to be. Just like last time it's a bitch to stitch but since I know how awesome it's going to look I also know it's going to worth every hour I spend on it.

This yellow thing right here. Looked pretty good. But I never wore it because it doesn't go with anything else in my medieval wardrobe.

So after unpicking the front seam I lined it with linen and hand sewed 42 buttonholes and as we speak I'm attaching the buttons. After I'm done with that I'm moving on to make slits that will serve as pockets of sorts. As this is the second layer and my belt goes on the first layer I'll be able to reach in through the slits and fetch things out of my purses. This was apparently very popular in fashion in Britain in the 1360's to 1390's and it looks absolutely dashing! Which is of course why I'd like to mimic the style.

Now, back to the buttons. All these f-ing buttons.

Instant reaction to: SH - Revelation

Well. That was unusually bad. And I really mean that.
I liked the first Silent Hill movie and not only because Sean Bean was in it but it had that genuinely eerie feel to it in addition to good music. In this second movie to the Silent Hill franchise it gets really bad. Not even the music makes it worthwhile.

Whenever I see Sean Bean I expect him to die at any point because that’s what usually happens, and having Kit Harington in the same movie just means that I have no less than two actors from Game of Thrones - subsequently I expect someone to tell Harington that he knows nothing.
In a fake American accent of course.

What I’m trying to say is that I don’t want anyone who actually quite liked the first movie to have any hope in liking the second one. It will disappoint you greatly.
You have been warned.

On the subject of the 12th Doctor

Of course, he doesn't have a good REAL suggestion for a female Doctor which brings his score down a few notches. But he's still kind of funny.

PB & J toast

Did you guys know that hand sewn fabric buttons look a bit like little squids?

And these are the big ones for the front of the wool kirtle. Twenty of them. Other than these, I've got smaller buttons for the arms, seventeen so far but I need at least nine more. At least. They're a total bitch to stitch. And don't even get me started on the linen dress with the lacing holes and everything. Ugh.
On the other hand, I recieved my new books on medieval fashion today. One of the two is on English fashion of the 14th century and I'm thrilled. Lots and lots of photos of illuminated manuscripts. Yeah. Definite nerd.

Sorry, I'm time-travelling

I'm sorry for leaving you guys hanging but I've been stitching lacing holes for a linen dress I'm making while also making fabric buttons for a wool dress that I'm also making. This means that my interest in medieval fashion has finally caught up to me in time to finish some new outfits for The Medieval Week on Gotland. I didn't go last year because after seven consecutive years I was feeling a little tired of it all and frankly, I didn't like that feeling. This year is very different because I really want to go. I want to wander around the beautiful town of Visby, wear my dresses, listen to the kind of music that makes my foot start tapping involutarily. I want to drink Kapitelhusgården's beer with my friends, I want to smell like burning wood for weeks and I want to saunter around the marketplace just to feel the scents of candied almonds and different foods. Oh, the overpriced food. Oh, saffron pancakes.
